Miwa Yagi

Miwa Yagi was born in Tokyo, Japan.

Miwa's creativity surfaced at a young age, when she preferred to make her own toys and dolls rather than play with more conventional ones.  She also discovered her passion for cooking at a young age, hosting  make-shift tea parties featuring a menu of leaves, grass, nuts and worms.  By the age of five, she could make her own lunch and take it to kindergarten.  At school, she would show off her fabulous sandwiches accented by such exotic combinations of ingredients as peanut butter and ham, or egg salad and jam.

Miwa was a sickly child, spending much of her youth in bed, daydreaming in the morning or haunted by nightmares after dark.  She missed a lot of school due to sickness, choosing rather to stay home and play on her own.

After high school, Miwa moved to Oxford, England to study English language, followed by a move to New York City in 1994 to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology.  At F.I.T., Miwa majored in fashion and jewelry design.  Miwa founded her own design company, designing and manufacturing jewelry for two years before rediscovering her passion in visual and kinetic art.  During this time Miwa studied anatomy and life drawing at Art Student League (New York City).

Miwa's inspiration led to the creation of Dolla in 2002.  Dolla was introduced to the world at Miwa's first solo exhibition at Dollhaus Art Gallery (Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NYC) in October 2004.

Miwa currently resides in San Francisco, California.
